Symmetrical, mandala-like designs inspired by Buddhist art and other Asian religious imagery are rendered with painstaking line work and filled with minute details. Inge Vandormael cites the cyclical nature of life and death as her primary inspiration. Her subject matter is not morbid, but rather symbolic. Hearts engulfed in flames and birds flying into the abyss seem to allude to the possibility of a spiritual dimension beyond the grave."

Decomposition of the Heart

"There is this man with a tree branch tied to his head. The branch flourishes and bares fruit and flowers. A bird lives in a nest within this tree branch. A serpent disguises himself as a bird wearing plumage to fool and distract the man. As the man gets close the serpent plunges into his mouth going down his throat and infesting his heart. The serpent sickens the man,corrupts him and soon, forces the bird that was once happy in the tree to fly away. This leaves the man sick and lonely. The man sets the tree on fire turning him and the serpent to ash in hopes of rebirth."

With this series, Scott Kirschner is working something out.. Using light, paint, graphite,charcoal and sweat, he is telling a story about love, mistakes and the demons we allow .

 a little about Scott....

Scott Kirschner was shaped and influenced by his earliest life experiences, with the loss of his Mother at the age of 3, then being diagnosed with A Plastic Anemia (Blood Cancer) at age 8 and watching his Father battle MS all his life. There was a somber thread that ran through Scotts most impressionable years. It was only natural that he become an artist and the sadness and isolation that surrounded Scott as a boy are now regurgitated into his imagery.
In 1991 he graduated with a Major in Illustration from Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia PA and went on to work as a freelance illustrator. Scott was one of the original 49 artists to work on the very popular card game MAGIC the Gathering creating approx. 43 cards. In the last couple years, Scott has been showing in galleries around the Country. “I like to use symbolism that I pull from my life experiences and create an image that will then hopefully make someone stop and wonder what the story is If I am lucky the viewer will find some way to relate to the image and feel emotion from my artwork”

New Artists and New works by the Old Vets.

We have the pleasure of welcoming our Newest artists into the Red Raven Roster of locals. James Nagel started with us just 2 short months ago and he is fitting in nicely.  This month we are pleased to announce a new sculptor, Esther Clark.  She works in clay and glass and creates fantasy sculptures and one of a kind glass beads and orbs. 

Jacqueline Chisick has been working on some new acrylic paintings and they are tricking in to the gallery as the varnish dries. Laurie McClave is steadily working on new studies in preparation for several shows at the end of summer. Jason Squire has just completed several photo shoots of our town and I hear there is a new Bell Tower image coming soon. Alicia Caruso has made some wonderful jewelry creations to go with her delicate water color and ink animals. Stop in and say hello to any of us, we like coffee.

We are so happy to welcome Braden back to the Red Raven Gallery for April.

Braden Duncan is a portrait artist by trade, imperfect by choice, and a cog in the machine of human mythology by default. She draws her inspiration from the peculiar minutiae of the human form, symbolism and mythology, the empty spaces left by missing friends, and the intricate elegance created by the convergence of biological and mechanical elements.

She is the co-founder of the Seattle Arts Coalition and a resident artist at Echo Echo Gallery in Seattle. She is the art director at Trabant Coffee & Chai, Laika Lounge, and The Georgetown Liquor Co, and she regularly assists with curating, art installation, and digital design for other art spaces around the Northwest. A graduate of Cornish College of the Arts, she resides in Seattle, WA with her chosen family and the animals of the Mongrel Circus.

The Big MOVE!

We are moving to the Undertown shops in Port Townsend at 211 Taylor st. and could not be happier! We have a great new neighbor with The Candle Store and a triple wide space... Our new space will give us amazing new opportunities starting with the addition of new Jewelry and sculpture artists that we were unable to have before.  We also have plans to hold classes and seminars there on a monthly basis along with art supply trading nights and other fun events.  

Our Grand re-opening will be Saturday July 6th during the PT artwalk, please join us then for refreshments, music,art and good company.  We will be holding a raffle for Art prizes that night... raffle tickets go on sale Saturday June 29th when we re-open for business.

Returning a year later, for her second show with the Red Raven Gallery we welcome Jel Ena from Los Angeles. Her show with us last year, Medusa in Furs, was very well received and she brings it again with new  mixed media works on paper and wood. Jels' style is at once in your face powerful and vulnerable... her subjects are the stuff of dreams in saturated color and fine swirling, graceful lines.

Our second artist in her first feature at the Red Raven is Alice Savage from Italy.  Alice is a well known international artist working primarily in pen and ink.  Her work is highly detailed and striking, concentrating on the face and intertwining the elements of nature in both flora and fauna.

Finally our featured local artist is gallery manager Laurie McClave.  Laurie is working in oils on wood for the show and will be debuting her latest pieces at artwalk, Saturday night June 1st. Her new works portray a bit of  her life here in the PNW and touch on the fact that her husband works at sea much of the year, a common theme here in Port Townsend. The color of the sky, the water and the nautical elements of life on our little peninsula are interspersed with Lauries' female characters in her signature style.

Help Red Raven Gallery Co-op Move to their new space UNDERTOWN!!!!!

The Red Raven Gallery must move in July, and we need your help.  We are re-locating to the Undertown spaces of Port Townsend which will be a very cool move indeed.  We are a not for profit co-op so we do not have the funds to pay for the needed lighting, new shelving and the various items that go along with opening up a new gallery.....The coolest thing is we will now have room for an artists space to work in house... but we will need to build a little corner for that.. so, we are asking our loyal art loving customers to donate small amounts to help us achieve our goal of creating a welcoming artist gallery environment that is in keeping with our affordable accessible artwork from amazing artists both locally and worldwide! There are rewards at every level of donating.. cause we love to give back and pay it forward! Full of symbolism, heroines, goddesses and talismans, Kim Gordon's "Dreamscape: Stories from Earth and Beyond" explores the age-old tradition of storytelling with special attention to legend and myth, both modern and ancient.

Kim Gordon is an artist living and working in San Francisco, California. Her art reflects and incorporates her interest in magic, travel, myths, historical events and family heritage. She prefers to paint on wood as the grain, and other natural elements of the material, contribute their own story to the final piece.

Specializing in the honored tradition of painting women, her figures are used as vehicles to represent a wide variety of issues. A soft strength balanced with quiet reflection is found in the faces of her subjects. The worlds she creates echo the present day, historical fact and mythological folklore.

Kim Gordon's art is exhibited, featured and collected nationally and internationally. Gordon's recent exhibitions include the annual Laluzapalooza show,

hosted by La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Her first show (acting as curator), titled, "Hope Beyond" brought together a talented roster of artists to successfully raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy (www.hope-beyond.com). Additionally, Gordon also generously donates her works to charitable causes, including the Sea No Evil Art Show and the Great West Coast Migration. Gordon’s work has been published in many publications, including Catapult Magazine, Clutter Magazine, Complex Magazine, Wired Magazine and Hi-Fructose magazine.

JACQUELINE CHISICK has emerged as an important artist of the Northwest. Her rich, luscious colors are always recognizable., and her forms seem full of the very life around her. Born in Arizona, she was raised in the hill country of cowboys and copper miners, with her family later moving to the desert; the muted colors of Arizona figured prominently in her earlier works. She received her Master’s degree from Arizona State University, and apprenticed under several European-trained artists. After teaching university and college art classes for twenty years, she packed her paints, her cat and her levis into her 1977 Porsche and moved to Port Townsend, Washington.

 The human figure has always been important in her paintings, but since moving to Port Townsend her colors have become more intense and rich, with mysterious, deep crimsons and violets contrasting with the light of gold and vermilion.

Julie Luke is an emerging visionary artist based out of Tacoma, Washington. She creates whimsical spiritual paintings that evoke her ideals of being boundless and one with spirit. She uses bold patterning, and intense contrast to express her distinct works of art. Julie’s works have been exhibited in galleries and art venues throughout the Pacific Northwest, including a commission for the private gallery of the Dr.Martens U.S. Headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Born on June 18, 1980 in Port Angeles, Washington, Julie was the eighth of nine children, and formal art culture was not accessible to her as a child. She began creating time based ecological art at the age of five years old and began to educate herself in painting when she was fifteen. Julie’s artistic beginning evolved from an innate means to express her distinctive voice among a repressive environment. Julie states that the world she would travel to while creating was pure and loving, full of otherworldly expression and freedom. Her inherent talent to express and create was influenced by her father, who was a self-taught blue collar artist; Julie’s father is still her favorite artist and key inspiration to date. Julie never imagined her art would bring her a life as a professional artist but blissfully welcomes the many exciting and healing opportunities it brings. She is currently working on several bodies of work,  including  ‘The re-calibration of light and dark’.

“Whenever I wanted answers or inspiration for life and art, it was not in the mundane or in the ordinary life that I looked for them, but in the unlimited world of my inner reality. This world, inhabited by mysterious places and people, has its own stories, its own rules, its own wisdom. I am only the storyteller.

I think of my work as a celebration of the human experience in what they have of sacred and profane. My language is the one of beauty and emotion, composed upon a hybrid of drawing/painting. Graphite drawing of classically constructed bodies, rendered with oil, acrylic washes and abstract embellishment, reflect the point of contact between the physical and the reality of dreams, spirituality, and abstract perceptions. I create my own mythology; characters, stories, fables, worlds that speak and connect with the viewer through the language of symbols and archetypes.  Themes like transformation and transitions, the human duality, spiritual and emotional experiences, and the ties of man with nature and the raw forces of life are often explored. Since I focus primarily on the female figure, I can say that my work is also about the the female experience according to my own vision of the feminine: power, creation, energy, witchcraft, life. My women are forces of nature, sorceresses, bearers of darkness and light.”

Artist of surrealist and visionary themes, Patricia was born in 1970 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she lived and worked until moving to the United States. Since she was a little child, she has been enjoying to give life to her private world through her drawings and writings. She has been drawing since the age of three, never remembering a single time of her life when she was not exploring some type of creative language. She has been also a performing artist, acting, dancing, and singing since her late teens. Although in part self-taught, she has had some formal training in visual arts that included academic drawing classes and a background in Fashion Design. Her love for teaching took her to a bachelors degree in Art Education with a specialization in History of Art from the Rio de Janeiro State University. But it was just after leaving her homeland that she considered the possibility of becoming a fine artist more seriously. Currently she has been consistently working as a fine artist, illustrator, and designer,  basing her images on her passion for the figurative art combined with ornamental abstracts. Her inspiration and aesthetic references come from several sources, from the theater and ballet to Eastern Art, from the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil to contemporary Pop Art, including occult symbolism, Tarot, Astrology and metaphysics.

Brazillia R. Kreep New Icons

Brazillia R. Kreep aka R. Richard O'Donnell.. coming fresh off his smash hit cabaret play last week, 'Bite Me!' He debuts his 2d work for the first time in Port Townsend.  His recognizable portraits stand out as pop culture icons in his own unique style of macabre tongue in chic retro.

The Kreep first appeared on Halloween, 2007 as a weekly column published by webzine Static Multimedia. The column, under the banner of Kreep's Korner, reviewed classic and contemporary horror films in rhyme which were also linked to a weekly podcast on iTunes, voiced by creator O'Donnell and engineered by Eric Hoffhines.[1] Formatted to resemble a penned letter to its readers, Kreep’s Korner included historical facts and an original poem about the film with the reoccurring sign-off of "In Eternity".

In 2008, O'Donnell began blogging regularly under "The Kreep" banner. Gothic poems in verse dubbed "Kreeplets" appeared almost daily, illustrated with original art, and covered a variety ofmacabre topics such as vampires, ghouls, and goblins. Other topics outside the sphere of horror included homelessness, love, war, and poverty. Additional blogs began reposting The Kreep such as In Shadows, Dirty Wings, and Gothican on a regular basis.

Zoom in/Zoom out : The Paintings of Counsel Langley

We are pleased as Punch to welcome our local creative and all around awesome gal, Counsel Langley as featured artist for the month of February! 

Counsel  works with acrylic paint, graphite and ink, as well as generous amounts of glitter, paper, and various recycled materials.

Her recent series of works were originally inspired by the Campbell McGrath poem, "Nights on Planet Earth." They reflect moments of awareness that so much is happening all at once, that tigers and happy hour exist on the same planet; that Jupiter and Twinkies share a solar system. "I find these times of hyper-awareness powerfully beautiful, disturbing, comforting, overwhelming, enlightening and unpredictable."

As a part of her larger body of work these paintings are hybrids of two opposing approaches. One, loose painting techniques: dripping, pours, splatters, which effectively represent natural elements—weather, water, clouds, smoke, etc. The other approach, using pen and ink with architects' tools, templates and compasses, Counsel fastidiously draw controlled lines, concentric circles, grids and repetitive dots; using these to reflect structures and infrastructures that we build.

"I am influenced by the look of outer space, computer chips, dramatic weather, electric circuits, decay, rock-n-roll glamour, plans and diagrams, b-rate sci-fi control panels, urban environments, fluid turbulence, engineering schematics and architectural drawings."

You can see Counsels work and meet the artist at the Red Raven Gallery starting with Artwalk on February 2, 2013.  The show runs through March 1st.

This Month for Artwalk Red Raven Gallery is Featuring a Long time resident artist, writer and all around awesome guy... Many of you know who Jason Starr Squire is, if you have ever eaten at Silverwater Restaurant he has probably plied you with the delectable fare.. or if you are a writer or lover of novel and prose.. he can be found in the Writers workshop on Sundays.  Jason is our newest gallery member and we could not be more pleased...
He had an awakening four years ago as the result of an extreme sleep apnea diagnoses.  Like a page out of Rip Van Winkle, Jason woke up in the middle of his life and started asking questions: "Who am I? What am I doing? Where am I going?"  There were no answers, only a new found view of the world around him.  He started writing poetry, and taking photographs.

"My dreams at night are still elusive and fleeting. I manipulate my photographs to look like how I imagine they might appear in my dreams."

We at Red Raven would like to welcome Shannon Connor Castle as our Guest artist for the month of December.

Shannon Connor Castle is a lifetime artist with a unique talent and extraordinary vision.

From her beginnings as a commission artist, in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, specializing in architectural custom glass carving and design, she has evolved into a multi-faceted artist of breathtaking scope and diversity.

Working in the physically challenging world of carved glass, Shannon Castle's sand-blast artistry creates breathtakingly detailed one of a kind three-dimensional large cold glass works that transcend common perceptions of the boundaries of the medium. That's just the beginning.

Once these glass works are created, she then adds color, gold leaf, and also creates hand rubbings on canvas of the carvings which then become original artworks on their own.  These final hand-made pieces are then photographed at high-resolution and printed using a Giclee process.  These prints are then mounted and displayed in a variety of formats that make these jaw-dropping designs financially accessible to a greater number of admirers.  Every piece is conceived, designed, created and finished by the hand of the artist.

Shannon Connor Castle

Constantly innovating, and challenging the limits of the possible in the world of art glass, her originals include a realistic hand carved 2,000 pound replica of a 1958 Harley-Davidson Duo Glide, in addition to her more fanciful, magical surrealist works of mermaids, angels and goddesses.  The Motorcycle was featured in an article in Easyrider Magazine entitled "Glass-terpiece".  She has also created a series of Mandalas, derived from patterns found within her carvings, and stylized pond scenes that have been featured in the Robb Report.

Shannon Castle lives in Kirkland, Washington with her husband, and renowned violinist, Geoffrey Castle.  She won't tell you how old she is.  

Red Raven 1 Year Retrospective

Red Raven Gallery opened it's doors 1 year ago in September, so we thought it fitting to have a retrospective of it's members work.  Red Raven strives to be a gallery that dances on the edge and showcases new and upcoming talent monthly with a new guest as well as new work from it's members.....
Bringing in the new year will be Sarah Fitch our local sculptor and owner of the gallery with some amazingly detailed new ceramic pieces, including her fantastically unique and quite large horseheads and of course her infamous Royale Raven relief sculptures.

Redd has worked with multiple genres of the arts,

ranging from painting, sewing, digital media, video animation,

She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2007.

She is a working artist originally from Germany,

now living in Pioneer Square (Seattle’s artist district). She can usually be found in her studio painting to BBC Documentaries, playing with her pet opossum, or chasing down the next strange adventure.

Amy Weber is a Red Raven Gallery co-op member and a popular local artist that paints imagination. Hers is full of creatures and hybrids of Robots and animals she loves. Her finely detailed and colorful creations are soulful and sweet and seem to come from dreamscapes.....

Amy earned her B.F.A. degree in Design/Illustration from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle; and an M.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University in New York. She has worked as a fine artist and freelance designer since 1992 and her work is sold here in the states and abroad as she has a wide ranging fan base. She lives on the water in a rural area of the Pacific Northwest in what her friends describe as "the middle of nowhere" with two blue heelers, three cats and a writer-in a land of real mountains, tall trees and those that hug them, serious coffee, rain, and the salty smell of the sea. Amy attempts to make a living with her art and she strives to create a lot of work that will have a positive effect on this home we call Earth.

A show featuring the illustrative and painting talents of Seattle artist RK Post and our local gallery member, Cj Lane,  with her new photographic figurative works 

A farmboy from Illinois with a gift for sketching, rk post was planning on a career as a veterinarian until illustration finally took over in his extensive college experience. By his graduation from Northern Illinois University in 1994, rk post was freelancing for the fantasy gaming industry doing interior illustration for several major game compa nies, gradually teaching himself how to paint with acrylics and eventually oils. rk garnered a staff illustration position at TSR and after its acquisition, continued in this capacity with new parent company Wizards of the Coast painting cover illustrations for games and novels. Passionate about expanding his skill set, rk moved into 2D and 3D art for videogames in addition to his ongoing freelance illustrations for Magic the Gathering and other franchises. He currently works full time as a senior artist for Big Fish Games. Rk's freelance career continues to flourish, with clients including White Wolf, WizKids, Fanpro, Microsoft (Mythica, X Box), LucasFilm, 20th Century Fox (both Aliens VS Predator), Sega (Dreamcast), Nintendo, Ballantine Books, Science Fiction Book Club, Hasbro (televsion and animation), Marvel Entertainment, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, the History Channel, and Blizzard Entertainment (Daiblo 2, Worlds of Warcraft) and SOE (The Agency). rk post published his first volume of collected works in the hard cover release, Postmortem: the Art of rk post. Though this first edition has completely sold out, it still appears on amazon.com <http://amazon.com>  as one of the more valuable fantasy art books in trade. A second volume continues to be in the works. 
  

A farmgirl from Iowa, Cj Lane has a gift with the camera lens. She started out after graduating from high school with honors and moving on through college, where she became interested in journalistic photography. This passion was furthered when she moved to Korea to work as a military staff photographer for the newspaper. Since then Cj has continued her path and took a turn to fine art photography. Her unique perspective and edge give her work a painterly quality.  Cj is currently a member of the Red Raven Gallery co-op and is working at her photography while raising a family here in PT.

This month at Red Raven we will be featuring New sculptural wonders by Sarah Fitch and Debuting the Amazing drawings of Marisa Rinaldo!

Sarah Fitchs' work in clay centers on the flora and the fauna that surrounds us.  Carving pieces in ceramic clay and painting with different glazes and even glass, she embellishes natural forms with figures of horses, ravens, wolves, dragonflies and other creatures to create works of art that resonate with our animal selves.  Sarahs' love for animals shines through in her artwork and her daily life, and her pieces are at once whimsical and serious.  Sarahs' newest pieces are something to see... Giant Horse heads and Royal Ravens are embellished with bits and pieces of poetry and prose and colorfully finished in fine glazes that shine.

Self taught Seattle native Marisa Rinaldo is an aspiring mixed media artist who's animorph gods and goddesses in are something to talk about and her forms in ink are amazingly filled with detail. 

She began her artistic endeavors at a young age due to the encouragement of her amazingly supportive parents, and spent almost all of her time drawing, playing video games, exploring the woods, or working with animals. At the age of 18, the Liberty Call tattoo shop opened in Port Townsend and she was enthralled and instantly hooked by the beautiful art style of tattooing and spent many hours down at the shop observing and learning everything she could from the shop artist. This style has heavily influenced her over the years, and is reflected in much of her work.

Sons of the Sirens

This month we are pleased to present the new and fascinating paintings of   Javier Ortega and Laurie McClave

Two intense figurative painters that 'bring it' with their character driven work...

Javier S. Ortega was born in Seville Spain where he was trained in sculpture in the "Escuela de Artes Aplicadas" and ceramics in the "Escuela Taller Plaza España". After this he traveled to Florence to continue his education. Upon completion, his time was divided between the cities of Seville, Valencia and the island of Menorca before deciding to move to the city of Seattle. Here in the states he is continuing his career with successful exhibitions of his figurative paintings in some of the cafes and galleries scattered around the Seattle area.  This past year Javier collaborated  with the dinner theater Teatro Zinzani in Seattle to create some breathtaking oil paintings that have been seen in “Maestro’s Menagerie” and “Hearts on Fire.”  His work is at once nostalgic theater and modern cinema noir.  

Laurie McClave is a local artist that concentrates on figurative, narrative works in oils.  In the last few years she has been working steadily and doing exhibitions throughout the country.  Laurie currently has her work in the Sea Shepard foundation show " Sea no Evil"  in LA, the Poisoned Apples show in Detroit and Swoon Gallery in San Francisco and LA.  Laurie is not only a full time artist, she also runs the Red Raven Gallery and curates the monthly shows including the benefit for the PT Artscapes foundation.  Laurie's work is a commentary on the modern feminine icon,drawing the viewer into a slightly surreal  fantasy.
